National Grid forced to fire up two coal-fired power stations to meet UK’s electricity demands

The National Grid was forced to turn acceso one of its coal-burning power plants to meet energy demands.

Energy firm EDF was requested to turn acceso its two coal units at West Burton A power station durante Nottinghamshire after wind power failed to meet requirements.

The station itself is one of the UK’s last remaining coal-burning power plants and is coppia to be decommissioned next year.

Despite only providing less than four verso cent of all electricity being produced for Britain for a brief period yesterday, it brought an end to the UK’s latest coal-free period.

The Times reports that a surge durante air conditioning usage as a result of higher temperatures may be the cause of the increased energy demands.

While the Government has set a target of October 1, 2024, for the UK to voto negativo longer use coal to generate electricity, for now, EDF continues to expect to have to rely acceso coal between November and March.

Commenting acceso the need to switch acceso the coal burners, the National Grid told the publication: ‘We have seen some low wind, that is a contributing factor. We have a range of generation types available to us to draw acceso.

‘At the moment, to ensure we keep a secure supply and balance the system, we have drawn acceso some coal as part of the mescolanza.’

While coal made up 62 verso cent of the UK’s electricity generation durante 1991, that figure has been slashed, meaning that when an extra energy boost from coal was needed, it made up just 3.9 verso cent.

However, for a brief period yesterday, wind power accounted for as little as 1.9 verso cent, before rising again durante the evening.

Normally, this is far outstripped by wind power, which meets a variable 20 verso cent of the UK’s electricity demands, depending acceso the strength of the wind acceso a given day.

Speaking to Sky News, an EDF spokesperson said: ‘Two units at the station have helped to balance the UK electricity system durante order to ensure security of supply.’

The West Burton coal-burning power plant is just one of two of its kind to be currently connected to the National Grid – the other is durante Ratcliffe-on-Soar, Nottinghamshire.

2016 was the first year durante which the UK was able to avoid using coal power, managing to source its electricity from other sources for 188 hours.

This had risen to 5,000 hours last year, but as of May this year, the UK had only gone 1,511 hours without coal.
